About Dr. Vincent Ekstrom

Dr. Vincent (Vince) Ekstrom is the founder and CEO of Matrix Mental Health and a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) providing psychiatry in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon

He believes he has been training for his role as a mental health provider for most of his life, drawing on a lifelong interest in the connection between spirituality, coping skills, and a deeper understanding of how people heal.

His guiding principle is simple: he makes recommendations as if every patient were a member of his own family, with the goal of genuinely improving their quality of life.

Education & Clinical Background

Dr. Ekstrom’s path into psychiatry began at Scottsdale Community College, where he earned his Associate of Science in Nursing in 2013, years he still reflects on fondly. His first nursing role was in the geriatric psychiatry unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phoenix, where his passion for mental health first took root.

While working full time, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Arizona State University, then spent two years on the Progressive Care (Telemetry) Unit at Banner University Medical Center, building a strong foundation in complex patient care. As his commitment to mental health deepened, he began teaching clinicals for nursing students at Scottsdale Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, and Creighton University — mentoring the next generation of nurses even as he advanced his own training.

He went on to complete his Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Arizona State University, graduating in May 2020, and holds board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).

Dr. Ekstrom's Approach to Care

Dr. Ekstrom practices a whole-person style of psychiatry that looks beyond symptoms to the patient’s full context, their history, their goals, and the life they want to build.

He takes time to listen, explains his reasoning clearly, and partners with each patient on a treatment plan that fits their needs, whether that involves diagnosis, medication management, or coordinated therapy referrals.
